“I had always dreamed of having a store like the ones that I grew up hearing about from my Dad, and reading about in the many books and novels that I have read on the history of men’s fashion. The kind of place that looks and smells like an old men’s club; the walls adorned with plaid wallpaper, hunting prints, black and white photographs of athletes from another era, and the smell of sandalwood hanging thick in the air.” These are the words of Bob Carroll, owner of John Hyatt a store named for Bob’s late father, John Hyatt Carroll.
Bob Carroll has over 20 years of experience in both the retail and wholesale business. His career started shortly after graduating from college working at the late, great Roots Clothiers in both Summit and Short Hills as a manager in Men’s Sportswear and Furnishings. It was here that he learned about fit, color and which tie and pocket square works best with which suit. From there he did stints at both Jos. A. Bank and Polo Ralph Lauren honing his sartorial knowledge along the way. In 1994 he made the jump to the wholesale side of the business working in New York for Tommy Hilfiger and then Timberland. While he was leaning much about how the wholesale business worked Bob yearned to have a retail store of his own and in 2001, after losing one of his best friends in the 9/11 attacks he decided to do just that. In October of 2002 Bob opened his doors and hasn’t looked back since.
